Senator Bernie Sanders is urging Congress to create rules for artificial intelligence (AI), pointing to polls that demonstrate strong public desire for safety regulations.
This announcement follows Senator Bernie Sanders’ ongoing efforts to create stricter rules for artificial intelligence. He recently co-sponsored the AI Data Center Moratorium Act with Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, which was introduced in March.
Bernie Sanders Tells Lawmakers to Pick Voters Over Big Tech
Senator Sanders shared his thoughts on X, stating that Congress hasn’t listened to the consistent calls from the public for rules to protect people from the risks of artificial intelligence. He described the situation as a conflict between ordinary voters and powerful technology companies.
He suggested it might be time for Congress to prioritize the needs of everyday Americans, rather than wealthy individuals, and start creating rules for artificial intelligence.
The senator highlighted recent surveys from Semafor and Gallup, revealing that most Americans – 70% – feel AI is developing too quickly. Nearly all respondents – 97% – also believe AI safety needs to be regulated.
“77% think entire industries will be eliminated,” he added.
A new poll from Politico shows that 44% of people think artificial intelligence is advancing too fast. Almost two-thirds of those surveyed also favor either strong rules or general guidelines to oversee the AI industry.
Public opinion of the AI industry seems to be turning negative, and there’s increasing criticism of artificial intelligence. Recently, speakers at graduation ceremonies were heckled after talking about AI.

During recent college commencement ceremonies, three speakers received boos from the audience when they mentioned Artificial Intelligence. The speakers were Eric Schmidt, CEO of Google; Scott Borchetta, CEO of Big Machine Records; and Gloria Caulfield, VP at Tavistock Development.

Democrats Reject Sanders’ Bill Over China Competition
Sanders has raised this concern before. Earlier in March, he suggested a temporary halt to AI development – a ‘reasonable pause’ as he called it – to ensure it doesn’t pose risks to people.
We can’t let a few wealthy tech leaders control decisions that will impact our economy, our government, and the future. We urgently need public discussion and democratic control over this important issue. We need to immediately halt the construction of new AI data centers at the federal level.
Despite support for the bill, some lawmakers have voiced strong opposition. Senator John Fetterman criticized it on X (formerly Twitter), calling it a “China First” policy. Senator Mark Warner went further, labeling the bill “idiocy” at a recent event and cautioned that it could allow China to gain a competitive advantage.
