Well, slap my wallet and call me crypto-curious! Former Ripple CTO David Schwartz, the man who probably knows more about XRP than your average blockchain enthusiast knows about their own bank balance, has tossed some of that very same XRP into the hat of John Deaton’s Senate campaign. Yes, you heard that right-Deaton, the political underdog who’s about as likely to win in Massachusetts as a snowball is to survive in, well, Massachusetts in July. But hey, stranger things have happened. Like, say, someone actually understanding how XRP works.
Schwartz Flings XRP at Deaton’s Senate Dream
The whole affair unfolded on X (formerly known as Twitter, because why not rename everything these days?) after Deaton put out a plea for donations on May 15. His pitch? “I’m not taking money from PACs, lobbyists, or special interests. Just from regular folks like you, who probably spend more on coffee than I’m asking for.” Enter Schwartz, aka “JoelKatz,” who chimed in two days later with the brevity of a man who’s seen too many blockchain whitepapers: “Sent some XRP.” Deaton’s response? A heartfelt “Thank you David!” Because, let’s face it, every little bit helps when you’re trying to unseat a Democratic incumbent in a state bluer than a Smurf convention.
Deaton, for those keeping score, is back for another round in the Senate ring after losing to Sen. Elizabeth Warren in 2024. This time, he’s got his sights set on Sen. Ed Markey’s seat, because why not aim high? In his fundraising video, Deaton positioned himself as the anti-politician politician, the kind of guy who’d rather have a beer with you than schmooze with lobbyists. “I don’t take big money,” he declared, “just small donations from hardworking people. You know, 25 bucks here, 50 bucks there. Basically, whatever’s left in your couch cushions.”
I hate asking for money, but I need your help.
Unlike career politicians, I don’t take PAC money. I don’t take lobbyist money. I don’t answer to special interests. This campaign is powered by hardworking people giving 25 bucks, 50 bucks, 100 bucks at a time because they believe…

Deaton’s shtick is that he’s the guy who’ll “put people before politics,” which sounds nice until you realize that’s what every politician says before they get to Washington. He’s also got plans for energy, housing, and healthcare, because apparently solving America’s biggest problems is as easy as sending XRP. Spoiler alert: it’s not.
For the crypto crowd, Schwartz’s donation is less about the amount (which remains a mystery, because why spoil the fun?) and more about the symbolism. Schwartz is basically XRP royalty, and Deaton’s made a name for himself by sticking it to the SEC over their crypto enforcement antics. So, it’s like a match made in blockchain heaven, even if the odds of Deaton winning are about as good as finding a Bitcoin in your kid’s piggy bank.
Back in 2024, Deaton’s campaign raked in $2.24 million, including $1 million he loaned himself and $1.15 million from donors. This time around, he’s doubling down on the “little guy” narrative, telling supporters, “The only way I win is if people like you donate whatever you can afford.” Which, let’s be honest, is probably not enough to turn Massachusetts red, but hey, hope springs eternal.
Whether this XRP-fueled boost will make a dent in Deaton’s electoral fortunes remains to be seen. Massachusetts isn’t exactly friendly territory for Republicans, and Deaton’s last run ended with a loss to Warren. But at least he’s got Schwartz in his corner, which is more than most of us can say.
At press time, XRP was trading at $1.38, because even in the world of crypto, some things never change.
