The US Securities and Exchange Commission’s attempt to vanquish Ripple Labs has finally been pronounced dead. Cue the world’s smallest violin. 🎻
On the gloriously bureaucratic date of August 7, the gladiators of paperwork filed a Joint Stipulation of Dismissal with the US Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit. This is, for those blissfully unfamiliar, legalese for “let’s agree to simultaneously drop these things and shuffle out quietly.”
SEC Waves the White Flag (Sort Of)
Here’s the plot twist nobody expected: The SEC threw its case (No. 24-2648) on the bonfire, and Ripple performed a synchronized dive with its own cross-appeal (No. 24-2705). All very polite. Both parties basically said, “Let’s never speak of this again, and also, I’m not paying your bill.” Even in defeat, legal teams remain apparently allergic to generosity.

Thus concludes what might be the most exhausting enforcement action in crypto history. Even Netflix rejected the screenplay, citing “too many footnotes.”
The last domino fell thanks to the aftermath of Judge Analisa Torres’ 2023 magnum opus on digital asset legality. The decision: Ripple’s institutional XRP sales broke the rules (naughty!), while sales to regular folks and secondary traders were, astonishingly, allowed. Presumably in the same way jaywalking isn’t really frowned upon if you’re doing it with sufficient confidence.
Backstory: Appeals, Drama, and a $125 Million Cliffhanger
Both Ripple and the SEC were so enamored with Judge Torres’ ruling that, predictably, they wanted bits of it changed. The SEC aimed to salvage its dignity by challenging unfavorable parts, while Ripple had its eyes on overturning a rather spicy $125 million penalty-not the sort of sum you find in the sofa cushions.
Like any good period drama, there was an ill-fated attempt at settlement. It would have slashed Ripple’s fines and erased the injunction-possibly with a flourish and jazz hands. Judge Torres, however, did her best impression of every grouchy school principal and simply said “No.” Thus, the appeals circus trudged on for another season.
But today-cue faint applause-a filing brought this tragi-comedy to its natural conclusion: nobody gets a shiny new ruling, and the $125 million penalty is vacating its escrow to visit the US Treasury. Congratulations, Treasury-don’t spend it all on one NFT.
XRP Market: Panic, Euphoria, Shrugs
Traders, with their uncanny ability to react to anything (even the weather forecast), dutifully sent XRP soaring 5% in the hour after the big “we’re done” document hit the docket. This came right after the coin’s all-time high in July-which, like most reality TV stars, was quickly followed by a dramatic swoon.
As for Ripple? They still aren’t allowed to hawk XRP to institutional buyers without a permission slip from the grown-ups. The SEC, meanwhile, is off to fight other shadowy crypto villains (or at least organize its paperwork). Judge Torres’ ruling sits as a modest consolation prize for everyone-nobody really won, nobody really lost, but plenty of legal bills were paid along the way. 💸
So ends our tale of regulatory derring-do. Ripple gets a slightly clearer roadmap, the SEC gets to say, “Well, we tried,” and crypto Twitter has to find something else to bicker about. Until the next one, folks.
