In a plot twist that would make even the most seasoned soap opera writers envious, zkSync’s founder is taking the gloves off against Canton’s ZK critique, revealing that their trust model is just as risky as the one they claim to be saving us from.
Canton’s founders have been playing the role of the cautious parent, warning buyers and regulators that zero-knowledge proofs are akin to letting your teenager borrow the car after a night of questionable choices. According to them, these proofs are too risky for institutional finance, which is amusing given how often they drive on the same roads as everyone else.
This week, zkSync co-founder Alex Gluchowski decided enough was enough. He publicly challenged Canton, arguing that their critique collapses faster than a poorly constructed house of cards. He made the bold claim that Canton’s own infrastructure is like the pot calling the kettle black-it fails the very test it imposes on others, which is rich coming from the folks with the trust model equivalent of a rickety bridge.

ZK Proof Risks and the Redundancy Problem in Blockchain Infrastructure
Canton’s argument hinges on complexity. They claim that ZKP bugs may slip through undetected, much like that one sock that always goes missing in the laundry. These invisible flaws then spread across the network, creating systemic risk-because who doesn’t love a little drama in their financial systems?
Gluchowski threw shade on this reasoning, pointing out that this logic assumes any tech is the only line of defense, which is about as naive as believing that an umbrella will keep you dry in a monsoon. Aviation, nuclear systems, and medical devices all rely on software that can fail, yet they continue to operate because their designs incorporate redundancy and containment. Perfection is overrated, especially when you’re dealing with anything more complex than a toaster.
The real question, he argued, is whether a system has more than one line of defense. Spoiler alert: Canton’s model does not. Its privacy and integrity layer is like a one-legged stool-entirely dependent on trusted operators keeping data separate. If those operators get compromised, manipulated state moves through the network silently, like a ninja in the night, with nothing to catch it.
Canton founders claim ZK proofs are too risky for institutional finance. They’ve been making this argument to buyers and regulators, publicly and behind closed doors. It deserves a public answer.
Let’s see if the argument holds-and if Canton’s infrastructure passes its own…

Canton vs. Prividium: Comparing Institutional Blockchain Security Models
Gluchowski contrasted Canton’s setup with Prividium’s layered architecture, which is like comparing a well-cooked soufflé to a deflated pancake. Prividium operates three independent defenses, like a well-prepared spy team. Institutional partners run nodes within regulated environments, while zero-knowledge proofs serve as the cherry on top of an already impressive cake.
As ZK proof systems mature, multiple independent provers can verify computations, so if one flaw slips through, it gets caught by another-like a game of Whac-A-Mole gone right.
Containment operates differently too. Each Prividium instance is a separate chain tied to one institution, meaning even if an attacker breaks into one institution and finds a ZKP bug, the damage stays local. It’s like a neighborhood barbecue where only one family accidentally sets off the fire alarm.
Gluchowski didn’t stop there-he also poked fun at Canton’s reliance on DAML, its proprietary smart contract language. He noted that Ethereum’s EVM has survived over a decade of adversarial testing, with hundreds of billions of dollars on the line. Meanwhile, DAML has had about as much scrutiny as a reality TV star’s relationship status-every vulnerability Ethereum has faced still lies ahead for DAML, with far fewer developers watching the drama unfold.
