For years, Lightning Network has been touted as a way to make Bitcoin payments faster and cheaper. However, for the average person, using it currently involves a trade-off: either a simple, managed wallet or a more complex, self-managed system that requires effort to set up and maintain – including managing payment channels, ensuring funds are available, and staying connected to the network to avoid failed transactions.
Cake Wallet’s latest update aims to make using Lightning Network easier for everyone. The new version includes self-custodial Lightning support, allowing users to send and receive fast Bitcoin payments directly from their phones without needing technical expertise or trusting a third party with their funds. Users also have the flexibility to convert their Bitcoin back to on-chain transactions whenever they want.
A Lightning UX for the people
This launch focuses on a new integration using the Breez SDK and Spark. Cake is presenting this as a solution that finally makes truly self-custodial Bitcoin experiences practical and easy to use. It eliminates the technical hassles for users, such as managing payment channels, ensuring sufficient network capacity, handling liquidity, and constantly monitoring for uptime.
As a researcher following Cake Labs, I understand their recent release is fundamentally about giving users control. CEO Vikrant Sharma put it simply: they want to avoid forcing people to choose between ease of use and owning their own data and digital freedom.
Spark is an interesting project worth exploring. It’s a new technology built on top of Bitcoin, specifically designed to make payments and transactions faster and easier. It allows developers to create applications directly on the Bitcoin network while still working with Lightning, a popular payment method. Essentially, Spark helps wallet providers improve the Lightning experience for their users without requiring full control of their funds – meaning users retain ownership and control.
Privacy-First
Cake is prioritizing user privacy. When receiving payments through the Lightning Network, users don’t need to share their Spark address. Also, Spark transactions aren’t automatically made public on block explorers, which helps keep financial activity more private.
For a while now, the company has been increasingly focused on Bitcoin privacy. They’ve been adding features like Silent Payments and PayJoin v2 to make Bitcoin transactions more difficult to track and link to specific users.
Human-Readable Lightning Addresses and Spending Options Inside the App
While Lightning offers quick and affordable transactions, it can be inconvenient for everyday use. For example, each payment currently requires creating and manually sharing a new invoice.
Cake Wallet is making it easier to receive Bitcoin by letting users create simple usernames – like @cake.cash – to receive payments instead of sharing long, complicated invoice strings. These usernames can be set up instantly and don’t require any minimum Bitcoin balance.
This update integrates Lightning Network directly into Cake Pay, Cake’s service for prepaid debit and gift cards. Cake Pay lets users purchase gift cards or add a debit card to Apple Pay or Google Pay, making it easier to spend cryptocurrency without leaving a public record of transactions.
All Your Bitcoin, Lightning, and Storage in One App
Many Bitcoin users still use one app for everyday payments and another for long-term storage.
Cake Wallet’s latest update combines all your Bitcoin tools in one app. You can now easily manage your Bitcoin, use Lightning for faster payments, enhance privacy, and connect hardware wallets – all without needing to switch between different apps or copy and paste addresses. This lets you seamlessly move funds between secure cold storage, on-chain transactions, and Lightning payments, all within Cake Wallet.
This update focuses on making Lightning easier to use every day, with features like simple, human-readable addresses and the ability to use Lightning with Cake Pay for gift cards and prepaid cards. If it proves dependable in practice, Lightning could finally become a convenient payment method right on your phone.
