First, let me just say that Krispy Kreme is giving away, no, no. It’s paying a million bucks because someone somehow figured out how to siphon YOUR personal data while they were busy making donuts. Thought about that? I know you did.

The settlement finds that the doughnut house will cough up $1.6 million to put an end to a class action lawsuit that hit 161,676 people-yes, that includes the guy who works in line three at Blockbuster. Their computers were basically an open buffet for the highway, and kaboom: personal info went on a world tour.

Those of you whose losses are verified will get up to $3,500 in cash for things you spent due to the breach. If you’ve lost nothing, you’ll still get $75. Oh, and each eligible class member gets a year of free credit monitoring-because, of course, the only thing better than a free year of monitoring is a free year of donuts.

Krispy Kreme claims zero fault. But we all know when a cake shop says “no problem” after you find your ID on Facebook.

Claims have to be filed online or mailed by June 22. If you decide you’re not playing the game, you can opt out or object by June 6. The big hearing to confirm all of this is scheduled for July 6. So, basically, doing nothing is not an option.

Last year, the company notified people that an unknown hacker crept into their systems, gothold – they stole names, SSNs, DOBs, driver’s licenses, etc. We’re all just waiting to see how many donuts it takes to cover that breach.
