While most of us were busy binge-watching Netflix and stuffing our faces with pizza, Jack Dorsey, the CEO of Bitcoin tech firm Block and former Twitter CEO, decided to spend his weekend building a messaging app that exclusively communicates via Bluetooth. ๐ฎ He calls it “Bitchat,” and it’s already causing quite a stir in the tech world. ๐คฏ
In a post on X, Dorsey shared his weekend project, which involved learning about Bluetooth mesh networks, relays, and store and forward models, message encryption models, and a few other things. ๐ค
But wait, there’s more! Dorsey has even published a whitepaper on Github and uploaded a test version of the app to Apple’s “Testflight” platform. The whitepaper describes Bitchat as “a secure, decentralized, peer-to-peer messaging app that works over Bluetooth mesh networks.” ๐ฒ
What’s even more impressive is that Bitchat doesn’t even require an Internet connection or phone number, according to the whitepaper. It also features end-to-end encryption, automatically pitting itself against Meta’s Whatsapp. ๐ฌ
However, a few people pointed out several key features that are missing from Bitchat. But Dorsey is not one to be deterred. He responded, “Yes, will work on these. Started small.” ๐ช
Not bad for a weekend’s worth of work, eh? ๐
