Well now, folks, it seems the digital gold rush has a sneaky crack in its vault. Over a hundred thousand-yes, 120,000-Bitcoin wallets across the globe are about as secure as a barn door left wide open. Thanks to a bug in that fancy Libbitcoin Explorer (bx) 3.x library, scoundrels with a bit of know-how can stroll right in and help themselves to your digital treasure. And all because of a little thing called weak random number generation-sounds fancy, but it’s about as reliable as a screen door on a submarine. 😏
Bitcoin wallets vulnerable enough to get hacked faster than a boy’s first kiss
The trouble first surfaced back in November 2023, and it’s still lurking around like a bad smell. The Libbitcoin Explorer, which is supposed to be your trusty tool to manage Bitcoin, made its own Achilles’ heel with a seed generator about as random as a coin flip during a tornado. The clever folks at OneKey-they’re the guards at the digital vault-posted a warning on October 17, 2025, saying that if you used certain versions of Trust Wallet or the Libbitcoin Explorer, you could be on the chopping block.
The so-called “Milk Sad” incident didn’t mind, it claims, and your precious private keys or mnemonic aren’t at risk-yet. But the real problem lies in that buggy software-Libbitcoin Explorer (bx)-that used the Mersenne Twister-32 algorithm, which sounds fancy but was seeded only by the system clock. Yes, your wallet’s secrets might be as easy to guess as a faded family joke. 🤦♂️

This toolkit-handy for coding up Bitcoin wallets in C++-thought it was being clever. It used a limited seed space of 2³², which in plain English means an attacker with a decent computer could crack the code faster than you can say “blockchain.” Basically, if your wallet was made with certain versions of Trust Wallet or straight-up Libbitcoin Explorer (bx), a hacker could almost certainly rifle through your private keys in a matter of days. Magnificent, isn’t it?
Yep, a high-powered pc could enumerate all those seeds in days-like counting grains of sand-and then poof! Your Bitcoin assets could be whisked away before you even finish your morning breakfast. 🤯
And here’s the cherry on top-despite everyone knowing about this weakness for two years, it still haunts the wallets of many a Bitcoin holder like a ghost at a wedding. Nice, huh?
Three foolproof tricks to keep your digital loot safe and sound 🛡️
If you’ve been using a non-custodial wallet from 2017 to 2023 that might be vulnerable, it’s about time to do some quick housekeeping. Move your coins to a more secure storage system-something that uses that fancy Cryptographically Secure Pseudo-Random Number Generator tech, or CSPRNG for short. Sounds complicated, but it’s just digital armor.
And while you’re at it, generate a spanking-new seed phrase based on BIP 39 rules-think of it as changing your digital locks. Best not to let some hacker waltz in with an old, weak seed.
Last but not least, inspect all your paper or hardware wallets buried in drawers or sitting idle-this “Milk Sad” bug could very well be hiding there. Oh, and always ensure your software is the latest version-because old software is like an open bar for troublemakers.
