Oh, honey, here we go again! Hackers in a fancy suit (or is it a hoodie?) posed as Amazon and the FBI to scam an elderly couple out of $250K. What could possibly go wrong? đź’¸
Authorities say the 82 and 84-year-old victims got an email that said, “Hey, your Amazon delivery is missing, and you owe $200K!” Because nothing says “trust me” like a random email with a $200K debt. 📧
They were told, “No interest if you pay now!” So they sent Bitcoin, Western Union, and Apple gift cards over months. Because who doesn’t want to send $200K in Apple gift cards to a stranger? đź§
Then they upped the ante by pretending to be FBI agents and saying there was a “mole” at their bank. “Don’t call your bank!” they said. “And also, let me take over your computer!” 🕵️‍♀️
The scheme led to repeated transfers totaling $250K before the cops were called in December 2025. Because who needs a vacation when you can spend months sending money to scammers? đź•’
The sheriff’s office says it’s almost impossible to get the money back because crypto and remote transfers are like a game of “Where’s Waldo?” with your savings. đź§
