Why Ripple‘s CTO Emeritus Is Pitching Privacy Protocol Names to Solana’s Top Contributor

David Schwartz, the CTO of Ripple, suggested several names – Umbra, Solstice, Veil, Specter, Obsidian, Nyx, and Obscurant – for a new privacy feature on Solana Labs, after a request from Mert Mumtaz.

The recent collaboration isn’t surprising; it stems from a shared interest in privacy among leaders from the XRP and Solana blockchain communities, despite their historical competition.

Two ecosystems, one goal

Helius CEO Mert Mumtaz has been a strong voice for privacy in the crypto market, and a supporter of Zcash. He’s now working to create privacy tools specifically for the Solana network.

As a crypto investor, I’ve been following the XRPL, and Ripple’s CTO Emeritus, David Schwartz, has been upfront about its limitations. He pointed out last year that, unlike privacy coins like Monero and Zcash, or smart contract platforms like Ethereum and Solana, the XRPL doesn’t offer the same level of built-in anonymity. Basically, if privacy is a big concern for me, XRPL isn’t the best choice compared to those other options.

Umbra, Solstice, Veil, Specter, Obsidian, Nyx, and Obscurant are all names that sound pretty good. They’re likely already in use, but I think they have a nice ring to them.

In 2025, the XRP community is actively working on privacy solutions, with help from both RippleX and independent developers. This year marks a significant step forward, largely due to the release of features like Confidential Tokens (MPT) that have been highly anticipated.

Rather than focusing on competition between blockchains like Solana and XRP, this situation shows real collaboration within the crypto industry. Developers on different sides are agreeing that privacy is a vital area that needs to be improved through teamwork, no matter which blockchain technology is used.

From my analysis, the key takeaway here is that both Ripple and Solana are actively laying the groundwork for zero-knowledge (ZK) privacy solutions. Ripple seems focused on confidential banking applications, while Solana is geared towards incredibly fast and inexpensive anonymous transactions within the DeFi space. I believe that projects like Umbra or Solstice, should they emerge on either network, will essentially be the visible face of much larger, fundamental changes already happening in their underlying code.
