Coinbase Blockchain Forensics Help UK Convict 5 in Crypto Kidnapping Case

Coinbase helped British police convict five criminals involved in a violent kidnapping by using blockchain technology to track stolen money. Their team monitored the funds as the crime happened, allowing them to follow the money’s digital trail in real time.

My research into this case started with the events of last July. A 36-year-old man from Hertfordshire encountered four people he didn’t know at a bar in Shoreditch, east London. Unfortunately, things quickly escalated. These individuals forced him back to his home and then pressured him into setting up several financial accounts, one of which was Coinbase.

Coinbase’s systems apparently detected that a customer was being pressured when someone tried to withdraw money from their account.

As an analyst, I can confirm that the exchange proactively contacted UK police during the incident. We then immediately began tracing the movement of the stolen funds to understand where they were going.

Detectives followed the money trail, finding approximately £1,900 (about $2,500 in cryptocurrency) and other traditional currency spread across several digital wallets. They connected one of these wallets to a suspect who also had an account with Coinbase. This evidence, along with expert analysis, was shown to the court in St Albans.

Four people were found guilty of planning a robbery, kidnapping, and holding someone captive. Another person was convicted of laundering money. The Hertfordshire Major Crime Unit was in charge of the investigation.

We were able to follow their activities as they unfolded thanks to the transparency of blockchain technology, explained Paul Grewal, Coinbase’s Chief Legal Officer.

The verdict lands as physical crypto kidnappings and wrench attacks continue to rise.

Between January and April 2026, CertiK recorded 34 instances of people being physically attacked and robbed for their cryptocurrency. London has seen a rise in these robberies, with many targeting users of mobile wallet apps.

These convictions are part of an increasing trend of using blockchain analysis to help with criminal investigations. As violence linked to cryptocurrency grows, exchanges are increasingly relying on this type of evidence to defend themselves.
