At Bitcoin Amsterdam on 13 November, Alderney’s Edward Hill delivered a pitch so grandiose it could only belong in a Bulgakov novel: “Let us transform this speck of land into a Bitcoin utopia, where renewable energy and regulatory leniency reign supreme!” He spoke with the urgency of a man who’d just discovered his island’s tides could power both turbines and delusions of grandeur.
Hill began by situating Alderney in a geopolitical tangle only a bureaucrat could love: “We’re a Channel Island, semi-independent, part of the Bailiwick of Guernsey, 8 miles from France, and yet… British. It’s like a bureaucratic Russian nesting doll!” He paused, as if expecting the audience to unravel the paradox with applause.
The Next Bitcoin Island?
Why Alderney? Because, as Hill declared, “We’re not Bitcoin experts! We’re just a small government with a big appetite for economic reinvention. Bring us your wisdom, and we’ll build a Bitcoin Eden!” His words dripped with the kind of earnestness that precedes catastrophic folly.
“Our e-gaming industry generates 84 billion million in GDP,” he said, as if this were proof that digital fantasies could fund real-world revolutions. “We’ve mastered regulation in virtual casinos! Now, let’s do the same for Bitcoin. Imagine: Victorian forts housing mining rigs! It’s poetic, isn’t it?”
Hill’s pitch leaned on fiscal absurdity: “No corporation tax, no VAT, no inheritance tax-just a 20% income tax. Come live here, buy a house, and forget about financial entry requirements! We’re not here to gatekeep; we’re here to gatecrash tradition!”
The pièce de résistance? Tidal energy. “Our tides are so fierce, they could power a thousand Blockchains!” he proclaimed, gesturing to Alderney’s Victorian forts like a mad alchemist offering a cauldron of gold. “These ancient sentinels of war are now poised to host Bitcoin’s future. It’s like a steampunk fairy tale!”
On regulation, Hill promised a “flexible framework” under Guernsey’s watchful eye. “We’ll dance with regulators, twist the rules, and make Bitcoin-friendly laws! But only for Bitcoin. No other assets. We’re not here to democratize finance-we’re here to monetize destiny!”
Aldeney’s vision includes a “Bitcoin research engineering campus” and a “neo bank,” all while educating locals to “dispel skeptics and rumors.” Because nothing says “trust us” like admitting you need to teach your citizens what Bitcoin is. 🙃
Joining the ranks of Malta’s “Blockchain Island” and Boracay’s “BTC Island,” Alderney now claims its own absurdity. As the sun set on Bitcoin Amsterdam, Hill’s vision lingered like a dream-one where tides, taxes, and Victorian forts collide in a symphony of speculative nonsense. 🌊⚡
At press time, BTC traded at $96,799-a price so lofty, it could only be the work of madmen and islanders with tidal aspirations.
