- Biconomy has proposed ERC-8211, a new Ethereum standard for “smart batching” complex DeFi flows.
- The standard lets AI agents chain multi-step transactions in a single atomic call, resolving each step at execution time.
- Ethereum Foundation researcher Barnabé Monnot says ERC-8211 aligns with the Foundation’s “Improve UX” push to hide DeFi complexity from end users.
Biconomy has introduced a new standard for Ethereum, called ERC-8211, which allows AI agents and smart accounts to complete complicated DeFi tasks in a single transaction. This is achieved through a feature called “smart batching,” where details for each step of the process are determined when the transaction is carried out, rather than when it’s initially created. Published on April 6, 2026, this standard works with current account-abstraction technology and doesn’t require any changes to the Ethereum network itself.
Biconomy has launched ERC-8211, a new system called “smart batching.” It lets users combine several actions into a single transaction and adjust details on the fly. This makes it easier for AI programs to carry out complicated tasks in decentralized finance (DeFi) without needing pre-set instructions or system updates.

Biconomy highlights a key problem with current DeFi systems: many batch transaction systems finalize all details *before* the transaction is processed, even if those details depend on things that aren’t known yet – like the final amount from a token trade or a loan payout. The ERC-8211 standard offers a solution called ‘smart batching,’ which figures out these details *during* processing. This allows each part of a batch transaction to specify how its values are determined – whether it’s a fixed number, calculated with a simple function, or based on current account balances – and ensures everything meets the necessary requirements before moving forward.
How ERC-8211 works
The ERC-8211 standard defines a way to group transactions, where each instruction includes details on where to get the data, how it should be used (as a direct call, value, or data input), and conditions that must be met for the transaction to succeed. This allows an AI agent to create complex actions, like swapping one cryptocurrency for another on Uniswap and then automatically depositing the resulting amount into a lending platform like Aave, using the actual amount received from the first step instead of a pre-defined estimate.
Smart batching includes special checks, called “predicate entries,” that don’t execute a transaction but verify conditions on the blockchain. For example, these checks can confirm a user’s Ether balance stays above a certain level during a complex financial operation. These checks are processed like regular transactions and act as safeguards, ensuring the batch isn’t just a series of hopeful commands, but a secure program with built-in safety measures.
Tying into Ethereum’s UX and agent roadmap
Barnabé Monnot, a research scientist at the Ethereum Foundation, told Decrypt that ERC-8211 aligns perfectly with the Foundation’s plans to improve user experience. He explained that improving user experience is a key goal for the Foundation’s protocol team, and ERC-8211 support is a direct result of that focus. The collaboration with Biconomy actually started at a workshop the Foundation held in 2025 as part of this initiative.
Monnot explained that the idea of agents taking action is relatively new, but has become prominent due to the fast-paced advancements in agent technology over the past three months. They see ERC-8211 as a great fit because agents can manage complicated transactions across different blockchains, and ERC-8211 provides the necessary infrastructure. Biconomy, a company specializing in smart wallets and tools for efficient DeFi and self-operating blockchain agents, has a history of developing account-abstraction technology and user-friendly, gas-free experiences. They state that ERC-8211 can be easily integrated into TypeScript applications that create transaction batches using their encoding system.
