Ah, the sweet taste of justice – or at least, a modest compensation for the bitter pill of having one’s personal data exposed to the whims of nefarious hackers π€. It appears that Prudential Financial, a behemoth of the financial world, has agreed to pay up to $5,000 to those unfortunate souls who were impacted by a major data breach in 2024.
According to the updated settlement portal, the company will provide this compensation to those who were affected by the cybersecurity attack, which occurred in February 2024. One can only imagine the countless hours of anxiety and frustration that ensued as hackers merrily danced through Prudential’s systems, making off with sensitive information such as names, dates of birth, account numbers, Social Security numbers, driver’s license numbers, addresses, phone numbers, and email addresses π.
The class action lawsuit, a mighty hammer of justice, alleges that Prudential was negligent in its duty to protect its customers’ personal data. And now, the company must pay the piper – or rather, establish a Settlement Fund of $4.75 million, which will be used to pay court-approved attorneys’ fees and costs, service awards for the plaintiffs, and the costs of administering the settlement π€.
But fear not, dear reader, for you may be eligible to claim one of the following benefits:
- Up to $5,000 for out-of-pocket losses, including fees for credit reports, credit monitoring, freezing and unfreezing credit, cost to replace IDs, as well as charges incurred from actual identity theft, fraud or other misuse of personal information πΈ.
Claims must be filed by October 3rd, so do not tarry! β° And as for the class action attorneys, they are asking the court for a modest $1.59 million in fees from the Settlement Fund, as well as a $2,000 service award for each of the class representatives π€.
Prudential Financial, an American-based financial services company with subsidiaries providing insurance, retirement planning, and investment management, has a staggering $1.5 trillion in assets under management (AUM). One can only hope that they will take greater care to protect their customers’ personal data in the future π.
