The person who led a fraud scheme across multiple states, costing victims over $1.5 million, could face up to 30 years in prison and will not be eligible for parole.
Nazaly Mason, originally from Maryland, has been convicted of conspiring to commit bank fraud. She admitted to the charges and pleaded guilty, according to the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Eastern District of Michigan.
During the hearing, the 33-year-old confessed to being the leader of the operation. He explained that he supplied his team with forged IDs and the stolen personal details of multiple victims.
Smith explained that he trained his team to not only memorize the stolen personal details, but also to open bank accounts in the victims’ names and deposit fraudulent checks into those accounts.
According to court documents, the fraud occurred between May 2022 and December 2023. Shannon Kurrie, who worked under Smith, recently pleaded guilty to conspiracy to commit bank fraud and was convicted earlier this month.
In addition to possible jail time, Smith could also be sentenced to up to five years of supervised release after serving any prison time, and may be required to pay a fine of up to $1 million.
As an analyst following the case, I understand the defendant will appear before Judge Mark A. Goldsmith for sentencing once the presentence report is completed. This report will provide background information to help the judge determine the appropriate punishment.
