Base MCP initially supports a range of popular DeFi platforms like Moonwell, Morpho, Uniswap, Avantis, Bankr, Aerodrome, and Virtuals. This allows AI-powered tools to assist users with tasks such as finding the best lending rates, handling their crypto funds, trading tokens, researching new projects, and trading perpetual futures directly on the blockchain.
Base allows developers to create plugins that send transaction information to Base MCP, but users always approve transactions through their Base Account, ensuring the AI agent doesn’t have final control. This setup can help reduce some risks with crypto wallets, though it still requires well-written instructions, secure plugins, and thorough user checks.
x402 links Base MCP to AI payments
Base MCP now works with x402 payments, a system for handling very small payments made by automated programs and online services. Base’s official guides explain that AI assistants can use USDC on the Base and Base Sepolia networks to pay for APIs that accept x402 payments.
Coinbase has been developing its capabilities with projects like x402 and Agentic.market. Agentic.market allows AI agents to independently find and purchase services using USDC. Previously, x402 processed around 165 million transactions involving over 480,000 agents when it first launched.
AWS now allows its AI agents to make payments using USDC through a new integration with Coinbase x402 and Amazon Bedrock AgentCore Payments. This builds on existing support for the x402 standard from Stripe on Base and AllUnity, enabling more flexible payment options for AI agents.
Security concerns remain part of the rollout
As an analyst, I’ve been reviewing Base’s security protocols, and they emphasize that no transactions occur on the blockchain without the user’s direct permission. Importantly, they’ve stated their Multi-Party Computation (MCP) server doesn’t store or gain access to users’ private keys, which is a key component of their security model.
Despite advancements, keeping AI agents secure is still a major concern. A new report from experts at Google, Meta, Gray Swan AI, EmbraceTheRed, and several universities suggests that AI agents should be considered potentially unreliable parts of a system. To improve security, it’s important to clearly separate the commands they follow from the information they process.
This warning came after Socket discovered another security issue: a malware attack aimed at developers working with cryptocurrency and artificial intelligence. The attackers were attempting to steal sensitive information like wallet details, access keys for secure connections, and credentials for cloud services and APIs.
