A Canadian man facing charges for staying in the US longer than his visa allowed is now accused of a $13 million cryptocurrency fraud. Authorities say he stole the money by pretending to be a customer support representative for cryptocurrency companies.
Prosecutors say 19-year-old Trenton Richard David Johnston, who was living in Miami, pretended to be a customer support employee for a well-known search engine and several cryptocurrency companies. He allegedly used this disguise to break into people’s online accounts and steal their cryptocurrency.
Prosecutors allege that Johnston and his associates stole over $13 million worth of cryptocurrency from victims and used it for their own personal gain.
Police have accused 28-year-old Brandon Michael Tardibone of Miami of helping Johnston hide while he was illegally in the country and of assisting in concealing money gained from the fraudulent operation.
Prosecutors say the two individuals spent over $1 million in illegally obtained money on expensive items like cars and jewelry, as well as entertainment and going out.
As an analyst following this case, I understand Johnston is accused of both conspiring to commit wire fraud and conspiring to launder money. If he’s found guilty on either count, he could potentially face up to 20 years in prison per charge.
Tardibone faces charges of conspiring to launder money and helping someone illegally stay in the United States. If convicted, he could face up to 20 years in prison for the money laundering charge and up to 10 years for the immigration charge.
