As a crypto investor, I’m really encouraged to see Ripple taking proactive steps to future-proof the XRP Ledger. They’ve announced a plan, rolling out in stages, to get XRPL ready for the potential threats of quantum computing. The goal is to have everything fully secured by 2028, which is great peace of mind for long-term holders like me.

As an analyst, I’m watching the recent news with a degree of caution. The progress we’re seeing in quantum computing is starting to raise real questions about the security of current blockchain cryptography. Essentially, there’s a growing possibility that the methods protecting blockchains could be broken in the future, which could put users and those with significant holdings at risk long-term.

XRPL Faces Post-Quantum Risk

Ripple explained that this is a pressing issue because Google Quantum AI recently discovered that today’s blockchain security methods could be cracked by powerful future quantum computers.

With XRP Ledger, this isn’t just a hypothetical problem. Every time an account approves a transaction, its public key becomes visible on the network. If quantum computers become powerful enough in the future, this information could be used to compromise accounts, particularly those that hold funds for a long time.

However, Ripple pointed out that the XRPL platform is already designed to easily adapt to future changes. A crucial part of this is its native key rotation feature, which lets users gradually switch to more secure keys without affecting their accounts.

The company also pointed out that XRPL can create keys from a single ‘seed,’ meaning new keys can be predictably and securely generated. Ripple explained that this is crucial for smoothly updating systems, as it lets users create and control new security keys in a safe way.

Although not complete solutions for post-quantum cryptography, Ripple explained that these features are core to the XRPL protocol, providing a built-in upgrade path that many other networks would need to create from scratch.

Ripple’s Contingency Plan 

In a blog post on Monday, Ripple explained that its updated plan focuses on two main goals: maintaining the current strengths of the XRPL network while preparing for a future shift to post-quantum cryptography, and having backup plans ready in case the need for that shift happens sooner than expected.

Ripple’s initial plan centers around preparing for the potential failure of current encryption methods and the arrival of ‘Q-Day’ – the point when those methods become unreliable. If traditional cryptography were to fail, Ripple states the XRP Ledger would automatically implement a backup plan to securely transition to more advanced, quantum-resistant encryption.

A key goal of the first phase is to help all account holders securely regain access to their funds. Ripple is looking into using advanced cryptography, specifically post-quantum zero-knowledge proofs, to verify ownership of existing keys without revealing them. This would allow users to move their funds even if their current security has been broken.

During the first half of 2026, we’ll thoroughly examine the potential risks quantum computing poses to our network. This will include assessing how adopting new, quantum-resistant technologies might impact how quickly transactions process, how much data we can store, and our overall network capacity.

Ripple is working with Project Eleven to speed up initial testing and development. This includes testing with network validators, evaluating performance on a test network, and creating a prototype for a secure, future-proof digital wallet – all efforts designed to move them closer to the next stage of their plan.

Final Step By 2028

Looking ahead to Phase 3, planned for the latter half of 2026, my team will be focusing on post-quantum cryptographic primitives that go beyond just digital signatures. We’ll be integrating these new post-quantum signature schemes with the elliptic curve signatures we already use, starting on our Devnet. This will allow developers to thoroughly test performance, usability, and overall system impact in a safe environment before we consider any changes to the live network.

By 2028, Ripple plans to fully implement post-quantum signatures across the entire XRPL network. This next phase will involve moving beyond testing and putting these new security measures into practice.

It’s not just about adding new tech – they’re focused on making sure everything already working on the XRPL doesn’t get messed up in the process.
