Artificial intelligence, the latest bright-eyed tyrant of our era, is marching into the solemn halls of banking. Jamie Dimon, perched in his high tower, scribbles in the shareholder letter about how this cold, calculating force will worm its way into every corner of JPMorgan Chase, faster than the internet once did-though with far less charm and far more existential dread.
AI might cure cancers, invent new composites, and even reduce accidental deaths. A noble dream, if one doesn’t consider the occasional misfiring, deepfake scandal, or cybersecurity fiasco lurking in the shadows.
“We will not put our heads in the sand,” Dimon insists. “We will deploy AI, as we deploy all technology, to do a better job for our customers (and employees).” Sarcastically, one might note that “better job” is a subjective term when algorithms decide who keeps a paycheck.
Risks abound: deepfakes, misinformation, cyber threats. Dimon warns that ignoring them could result in catastrophic consequences. “These risks are real, but they are manageable if companies, regulators, and governments prepare,” he counsels, subtly suggesting that most will neither prepare nor heed.
“The worst mistakes we can make are predictable: overreact at the first serious incident and regulate out important innovation, or underreact and fail to learn from what went wrong.” Effective oversight, he says, demands foresight and “discipline to fix what’s broken without destroying what works.” Charming, if somewhat optimistic.
AI could take away jobs
In the realm of mortal concerns, AI threatens employment. “AI will definitely eliminate some jobs, while it enhances others,” Dimon admits, with the faint air of a man handing out consolation prizes.
Redeployment is planned, but the irony is palpable: routine tasks vanish, while demand for skilled labor in cybersecurity and AI development skyrockets, leaving many to wonder if they’re being upgraded or quietly retired.
Across the industry, panic simmers. Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei warned that half of entry-level roles might vanish within five years. “I don’t write any code anymore. I just let the model write the code, I edit it,” he confessed, sounding less like a programmer and more like a supervisor of ghosts.
Meanwhile, OpenAI urges governments to prepare for the coming economic upheaval, calling for new taxation, protections, and social supports-as if bureaucrats have the luxury of reading tea leaves while AI marches on.
