Hightower Holding, a financial services company, is notifying hundreds of thousands of its customers about a data security incident that may have exposed their personal information.
According to a report filed with the Maine Attorney General, a Chicago company experienced a security breach in early January when hackers gained access to their network using stolen usernames and passwords.
An investigation revealed that someone downloaded files without permission, and these files included sensitive personal information like names, Social Security numbers, and driver’s license numbers.
The report indicates that a total of 131,483 people were impacted by the incident, with 1,557 of those being residents of Maine.
As an analyst, I can confirm we identified a security breach on March 12, 2026, and promptly notified those affected on March 23, 2026.
Hightower discovered a security breach around January 9, 2026, when they found someone had used a compromised account to get into their network. An investigation revealed that files were inappropriately accessed and downloaded between January 8 and January 9, 2026.
