Ledger and Trezor 2025 hardware wallets released: What’s new for users?

Oh, darling, have you heard? The ever-so-trendy hardware crypto wallet providers, Ledger and Trezor, have just unveiled their latest gadgets. It’s as if they can’t get enough of giving us more ways to keep our precious assets “secure”-because who doesn’t want more stuff to carry around, right?

First, Ledger-Parisian and effortlessly chic-decided that calling their device a “hardware wallet” was so last season. They’ve now decided to go with something far more mysterious: “Ledger signers.” Très avant-garde, wouldn’t you agree? Their latest little gem, the Ledger Nano Gen5, was released this Thursday with all the bells and whistles, including, of course, a bigger screen. Because who doesn’t love staring at a shiny new screen while protecting their cryptos?

Meanwhile, Trezor, the Prague-based rival, wasn’t about to be left behind in the dust of obsolete technology. They’ve launched the Safe 7, and it’s not just a wallet-no, darling, it’s “quantum-ready.” Because, of course, quantum computing is right around the corner. The device also boasts dual secure elements, Bluetooth, and wireless charging. Everything, really, except an actual sense of urgency.

Now, for those of us who prefer to scrutinize every minute detail, CryptoMoon has graciously decided to take a magnifying glass to these “innovations” to give us the lowdown on the key updates, fancy features, and, naturally, the “cutting-edge” security enhancements.

The Era of Ledger Signers

Now, hold onto your pearls! Ledger is taking self-custody to new heights by rebranding their beloved Ledger Live app to “Ledger Wallet.” Perhaps someone at marketing just had a particularly imaginative Tuesday afternoon? As if we were all just waiting for a change of name. But wait, there’s more: introducing Ledger Multisig! A tool designed to address that pesky blind signing vulnerability. Truly groundbreaking, if you ask me.

The Nano Gen5 also gets a makeover with the Recovery Key from June, Bluetooth connectivity (for that seamless, cordless flair), and a bigger screen-because, apparently, the previous one just wasn’t big enough to satisfy your crypto-fueled lifestyle. And all of this, darling, for just $179 in the US or 179 euros across the pond. A bargain, if you like your crypto security served with a side of style.

“It’s the same improved experience from our secure touchscreen signers, but more affordable,” said a Ledger spokesperson. Well, thank heavens for that, darling. Finally, an affordable way to feel superior to those without a Ledger signer in their pocket.

The cherry on top is that Ledger’s design mastermind, Tony Fadell (the same genius behind the iPod), has brought in Apple designer Susan Kare to create some exclusive badge artwork for the Nano Gen5. Because nothing says ‘top-tier security’ quite like a badge.

Safe 7: Trezor’s Quantum Leap

Trezor, not to be outdone, has raised the stakes with the Safe 7, their first quantum-ready wallet. Yes, you read that correctly-this one is prepared for a post-quantum world. No, we don’t know when that will be, but it’s nice to know they’re on the case, just in case the future decides to make a grand entrance.

The Safe 7 features dual secure elements and wireless charging because why not throw in some tech buzzwords while we’re at it? It’s also the first Trezor wallet capable of connecting wirelessly to your iPhone. Because, naturally, syncing your crypto to your phone is the new romance of the digital age.

For just 249 euros, you can own the “quantum-ready” Safe 7, which, according to Trezor’s COO, Danny Sanders, is poised to handle future post-quantum updates. Why, just yesterday, my toaster was quantum-ready. It’s truly the new frontier of consumer tech.

But don’t worry your pretty little head about the quantum threat just yet, as Sanders kindly reminded us: “Quantum computing is still in its very early stages,” so we’ve got time before our cryptos are at risk from a supercomputer. Bless their hearts, these companies are really planning ahead, aren’t they?

Are Older Devices Becoming Obsolete?

Now, for the grand finale-are the older devices being phased out? Well, of course not, darling. Despite the new shiny toys, both Ledger and Trezor insist that their older models are still perfectly functional. “We don’t design wallets with the expectation that users will collect them all,” said Trezor’s Sanders. Oh, what a shame. I was hoping to start a collection, but apparently, security updates will continue to grace the older models for now.

According to a Ledger spokesperson, they’ve never released an update that renders any older device obsolete. So, don’t fret about your trusty Nano S or X just yet. They’ll keep receiving updates until-well, until they don’t, I suppose. At some point, it’s just no longer feasible to support older products. How utterly tragic, but perfectly understandable.
